Our driver had no idea what they were for, but Dr. Google certainly does. Apparently a young girl and her brother were cleaning out their father's shed when they found some blue paint. They decided to take the paint and paint an old tree blue, just to see how their father would react. From what I could gather, her brother eventually took his life and she began to use the blue tree as a symbol of mental health. She became one of Australia's young stars and founded the Blue Tree Project to raise awareness for mental health. There are over 1100 registered trees, wome of which are in the US.

It is an interesting international project that bears watching. In this age of mental health crises, maybe seeing blue trees will help someone.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14961084387427038910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778743657914921207.post-13189954874425699552024-03-18T03:10:00.001-05:002024-03-18T03:10:09.299-05:00Heading to Cradle MountainBecause of a mix-up, we missed our tour to Cradle Mountain and our agent hired a private driver for us. Thank goodness! The weather at Cradle Mountain was abysmal - cloudy, misty, windy, and cold. We were not remotely interested in hiking, and so, after seeing the visitor center and a lodge, we went to several other places.

The forest on the way to Cradle Mountain changed as we went up the hill - beginning with the plains and traversing through thick rain forest. The ferns were huge, the eucalyptus trees tall, and the flowers gorgeous.

Apparently wombats can be seen in the area, but they must have been cold. We did see a wallaby, several kookaburras, and the cormorant above.

Then on Monday, when we went to Cradle Mountain, we were introduced to several others, and in order to remember them, I am writing about them.
Near Port Arthur, we drove through Doo Town, where Eric Round, a Hobart architect, started a trend by naming his home a name Doo I. Then came Doo Me, Doo Us, Dr. Doolittle, In Doo Time, Make Doo, Dooing Nothing, How do you Doo? . . . you get the idea. I think if we lived there, we would have to name our house Doo Dah!

Then we went to Sheffield, the city of murals where they have a competition for muralists. They also have murals on many buildings, some which were stunning. One of the best, I thought, was this one, where, from far away, it truly looks three-dimensional.

The one next to the above one is this one of a woman in car driving out of town to Cradle Mountain.

Each year a competition is held for murals on approximately 8' x 16' panels. Every year the theme changes, and at the end of the year, the winner is chosen to remain in the permanent exhibit and the others are sold. There are at least 20 years of murals in the park + the ones for this year and a few extras. Below are a few of my favorites from the competitions:

The symbolism of the current man who is who he is because of the men before him really grabbed me.

I so envy those with artistic talent, and these are just a few examples of a talent I really do not have.
Finally, Railton is the town of topiary trees. Many of them had not been shaped in awhile, but we saw some really fun ones. A town of topiaries is just pretty cool!

Apparently there are many other quirky towns like these, but we did not visit them. It would be fun to return, however, and find them!Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14961084387427038910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778743657914921207.post-52629427502285170632024-03-17T04:15:00.001-05:002024-03-17T04:15:05.120-05:00Cataract GorgeAnother highlight of our Launceston trip was Cataract Gorge. Our driver took us to the chairlift that took us over the Cataract Gorge. Launceston has created a park around the gorge, and besides a monstrous swimming pool, hiking trails abound. The chairlift was slow and relaxing, and the view below was just plain fun! Besides a large grassy area, the park had a huge pool, and people were also swimming in the river water. It was a beautiful day, hot enough for swimming . . . I can imagine in the summer this place is packed.

Once we arrived at the top of the chairlift, we were met by wallabies, padamelons, and peacocks. Not at all what we expected to find but a fun treat.

I wish we had had time to walk the trails - they seemed to be well used and beautiful. Next time!

And upon driving up, we were a little concerned. It looked somewhat like a shack - a tin building with an unassuming facade . . . not sure about this one.
We walked into a gift shop and cafe, but again, it was quite unassuming. We were hoping the tour would be ok, as we had a little girl who kept screaming, a building that was not the greatest, and gift shop that had some interesting stuff in it but just seemed a little understated.
We were taken into a room where our guide filled us in a bit about the platypus and the echidna, and it is a good thing our guide had a strong voice and a patient demeanor, because the little girl gave us all a little more than we wanted. Then we were treated to a visit to the male and female platypus. Worth every minute! The platypus are not as large as I expected - they are slender like an otter, about 15" long with a 5" tail, and they only weigh about 3 pounds. The males have a spur with a venom in it that is not fatal to people but can hurt for months afterwards.

Then we went to see the echidna. We sat on the ground, and they just wandered around us. One time, the little one actually crawled on Don's leg to try to reach some food. It was quite funny. The echidna has a tongue that is about 12" long and its spines are sharp but has no hooks, so they are not like a porcupine. It is "anteaterish" and walks around minding its own business eating ants and other insects.

We stopped for lunch at the Ross Bakery and tried their meat pies. Don's Curried Scallop Pie was delicious, and although I liked my salmon and brie, I preferred his!

The food was much more our style - nicely cooked salmon for Micky and me, fish and chips for Don. The building was very clever, which made for a fun meal.

Then we viewed the art work along the pier. One group of statues told the story of the 3000 female convicts who were kept in Hobart and the number of children who were in orphan schools because both of their parents were in jail:

This town has so much to offer, and we didn't see much of it at all. The building is meant to be confusing . . . and it was. We think we got to nearly all of the rooms, but if we had used the O app for every single project we saw, we would have been there for two days.
David Walsh is the brains behind the project - we were told he is a mathematical genius who made his money gambling, and apparently he is not allowed in gambling houses any more. The majority of the art in the MONA collection is his, though the museum does have special exhibits, including one on Christian iconography that is showing now. So . . . let's talk about that exhibit. Upon entering, one finds herself in heaven:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5g2Yu6mHpzeRibd6LueJzUCfChPpJD9vBMIN2McJJk6LrzTcJKUzNEQ3dMOV8YPtJf6X4un0Rvk35yxEfYBblGaCclveaLVNPehepcmMPnEbDMXRwEoNVGGW7zJRm0Ac4f2w-BLyY0C62TloLphbk1rvafGZIB4D5XYogZRIYHgoco5k6lZOfNo6PS-TR/s2892/FC7F6098-DE0A-4B66-8F13-32647F2B58D1.jpeg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="2892" data-original-width="2316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5g2Yu6mHpzeRibd6LueJzUCfChPpJD9vBMIN2McJJk6LrzTcJKUzNEQ3dMOV8YPtJf6X4un0Rvk35yxEfYBblGaCclveaLVNPehepcmMPnEbDMXRwEoNVGGW7zJRm0Ac4f2w-BLyY0C62TloLphbk1rvafGZIB4D5XYogZRIYHgoco5k6lZOfNo6PS-TR/s320/FC7F6098-DE0A-4B66-8F13-32647F2B58D1.jpeg"/></a></div>
In rooms surrounding "heaven," are various icons from a variety of countries, including Ethiopia, Greece, Israel, Italy, and Egypt. I appreciated many, but my favorite was a triptych done very intricately by a miniaturist. It was gorgeous, but of course, I did not get a picture - it was too dark.
Another favorite exhibit was one that captures singled words from Australian headlines and then "shows" them in streams of falling water drops. I found it to be incredible . . .
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyuoKGph7Xbuw6pRD0BGgWJdjA5BfRv4ewtmXvsJhgk7DrbLUtauchPQeOs5MPBxcaQeaHQh7zPD4ghdHVY_g' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>

Another one I loved was made of circular, metallic tags. When looking at it I had a hard time distinguishing what it was meant to be but when photographed, it was definitely obvious . . . I think Monet would be proud:

Called The Source, the entire restaurant is one large art project. From the painting above the stairs at the entry titled The Source (which could be interpreted as a sun, an egg, a yolk, or something in your imagination),

I am not sure we would eat there again . . . the food was good but a little too fancy for us, but as far as ambiance goes, it was pretty sweet!Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14961084387427038910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778743657914921207.post-58858015270228415132024-03-16T04:01:00.005-05:002024-03-16T17:42:21.799-05:00The Wall - Part 2One of the more novel and interesting pieces that I loved, not because it was beautiful but because it was so fascinating, was the wall.

And when you looked at the picture you thought to yourself, "Why Karen, that is just an ugly wall." You did think that, didn't you? Well, so did I until I read about it. In 2015, troops of oysters (did you know oysters were called troops?) were placed in the River Derwent as part of their heavy metal project. Oysters apparently are very efficient in extracting heavy metals from polluted areas, and so they were enlisted in an oyster farm near MONA to do just that. Then the oysters were harvested and encapsulated within the wall. Although it would take over a trillion oysters to clean up this particular site, the cooperation between art and science brought the concept together and proved that working together can create interesting solutions.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14961084387427038910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778743657914921207.post-46278691647437316382024-03-16T03:51:00.003-05:002024-03-16T03:51:58.408-05:00MONA Part I - Getting there and Before LunchWe had heard a lot about MONA, the Museum of Modern Art in Hobart, but I didn't know quite what to expect. I had heard all sorts of stories about what we would see, and some of it sounded a bit out there, so the three of us just approached it with an open mind.
We boarded the ferry at 10:15, and upon getting upstairs we noticed the seating was a bit different - some stylized seats along with seat that looked like sheep - we didn't sit in them, as they were rather hard, but the kids loved them.

That was our first clue that this was going to be a different kind of exhibit.
Once we arrived and walked up the 99 steps to the entrance (yes, 99 steps, and we were all to climb them unless we absolutely could not - and yes, we made it esily), we noticed many interesting sculptures outside. The truck is welded ornamental iron sheet plates - Don thinks they must have used a plasma cutter to make them so ornamental. Its size and intricacy impressed us. The trampoline rings bells if one jumps on it hard enough - I haven't been on a trampoline for at least 50 years, but I had to try and I was able to make the little bells rings - a little bit!

After milling around a bit, we went up to a restaurant called The Source to eat. Before we could get into the restaurant, we explored the kids' play area, and what to our wondering eyes should appear but a sculpture designed by a Wichitan so dear! Tom Otterness, who graduated from Southeast High in 1970 (he is Don's age) moved to New York after graduation, and his play structure, named Girls Rule, stands quite large in the middle of the playground. The slides a very long, and it gets very hot in the summer, but how cool to find something from Wichita at MONA.

The outdoors area was quite expansive with many areas for children to play and for anyone to sit. They had a provided sunscreen and water station, some really cool benches that had places for the sun to shine through, and live music.

Hobartians bring their blankets, sit on the ground, eat their food, and listen to two bands each night.
We missed the first singer - she played keyboard for Kylie Minoj - but the second band was called The Bad Dad Orchestra. As they began playing, several gravitated to the front where they danced the night away. Most of them were old people like us, but soon the younger crowd started dancing, too. The music was good, and although we only knew one song, it was our style of music.
Several things impressed us about the nights: the crowd was very calm and chill (could be due to the absoluetly perfect weather we encountered), the children were well behaved, people picked up their trash and actually used the trash containers, and the locals were very friendly and explained a lot to us. We were very surprised when one young woman walked up, threw her purse on the ground next to the wall, and went on to the dance floor to be with her friends. It was so wonderful to see such trust . . . I think that is just the way it is here, and I suspect in bigger cities less so . . . but we loved it. This night we got to see Hobart in action, and we loved it!

Food trucks selling Indonesian, Ethiopian, Chilean, and other foods, along with fresh oysters, beer, gin and wine lined the streets, and many from Hobart were sampling the goods. We had Chilean empanadas that were yummy, yummy, and we would have loved to try other kinds, but when traveling, we try not to go out on a limb and try items we are not certain would suit our digestive tracts!

Apparently Hobart has a number of distilleries, and since Gin only takes ten days to process, they have sprung up very rapidly. Whiskey is a staple of Hobart distilling, and one kind of whiskey sells for between $300 and $4000 dollars per bottle. And for as prevalent as beer and liquor is here, we did not see one case of drunkenness! Quite refreshing.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14961084387427038910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778743657914921207.post-68881168778274839832024-03-15T16:05:00.002-05:002024-03-15T16:05:14.459-05:00Tasman ArchesOn our way home from Port Arthur we had one more stop to make . . . the Tasman Arch. It is a cave that collapsed due to the action of the ocean water, and it has created a lovely picture moment. Our guide said we could go say "Ooh Aah," take a picture and return, but I told him since we are upside down, we had to say "Ahh Ooh."

When arriving at Port Arthur, one could go into a Gallery and find your character. Since the commandant of the prison kept impeccable records, all of the people really existed and their stories are Don's character was named John Jones and I was Alonzo Johnson.

We learned that most of the convicts sent here were from England, and most of their crimes were for petty crimes. But for many, the longer they stayed, the worse they became. My guy, Alonzo, was a comedian, but apparently he couldn't stay out of trouble - the class clown type - and he ended up staying in the colony for life.
Some of the others did redeem themselves and become upstanding citizens in the community, some tried to escape (one man actually killed a kangaroo and tried to escape in its hide . . . but the guard saw the roo and were going to shoot it for food, so the man threw off the disguise and went back in), and some managed to escape for some time, but unfortunately, many of them became repeat offenders.
We also learned that nearly 75% of all Hobart residents have convicts in their heritage, which makes sense once one thinks about it. With their recordkeeping it is pretty easy to find out.
Unfortunately several brush fires wiped out much of the site, but the sandstone buildings still stand, and those that were not in the fire have been nicely restored. We were quite impressed with the whole site and would recommend it to anyone who is in Hobart.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14961084387427038910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778743657914921207.post-73584524352631368922024-03-15T15:47:00.004-05:002024-03-15T15:47:47.841-05:00Port ArthurMuch like the Grand Canyon where you can see pictures but until you see the real thing, you don't quite understand the expanse of all of it, so it is with Port Arthur. Built in 1830 by convicts as a timber-getting camp, by 1833 it began to be used as a punishment station for repeat offenders from all Australian colonies.

Its philosophy of discipline and punishment, religious and moral instruction, classifcation and separation, training and education broke many men but rehabilitated others. At one point, 2000 convicts, soldiers, and civil staff lived there, and the convicts built buildings, made shoes and clothing, made bricks, built furniture, and made ships. They also provided physical power to the carts that brought people to the area, which was a highly-sought-after job since it gave the convicts a change of scenery. It also had an area for isolation and a sanitarium for those who were broken by the system, where the care for the convicts seemed to be very compassionate, in contrast to some of the silent treatment they received in other areas of the camp.

As you can see, the rooms in the isolation area area quite small. Silence is demanded for the entire time they are there, and they stay in their rooms most of the time. For those who have misbehaved, they are sent to solitary confine where they are in complete dark for 23 hours, and then allowed out in a yard for 1 hour. Apparently a number of those men ended up in the sanitarium . . . for good reason. Once there, they received very compassionate care. One woman remarked that it reminded her a bit of Clinger in Mash who kept trying to get out by pretending he was crazy!
Anyway, a bit more about Port Arthur in the next post.

If someone finds an injured animal or hits one, they are encouraged to bring the animal in to the sanctuary or call one of its rescuers, and even if the animal is dead, they ask people to check the marsupial pockets because frequently there is a baby in it. Many of the animals they have have been brought in as babies, and they manage to raise them, letting some of them go back to the wild.

The first animal we saw was a baby wombat. She weighed about 15 pounds, but she was was quite big and fat. Wombats have square poop (scientists have not figured out how that happens), and they are pretty easy to release into the wild.

They have a number of birds, too, but most of them cannot go back to the wild. Parrots are a family-oriented species, and unless the correct family is found, the released bird will probably be killed. They also receive animals and birds that are not native to Australia, so of course they are not released either.
We saw three tasmanian devils, and they are such an interesting critter. They have the strongest jaw strength of any animal, and soon a video will be posted here of one of them eating a piece of meat with a bone in it - crunch, crunch, crunch.

She doesn't look anything like the cartoon character.
We saw a little pandemelon, which is a beautiful little creature but apparently very mean . . .

Look at those teeth in that first picture - yikes - but isn't the black and white little guy cute?
And finally we were able to feed the kangaroos. That was pretty fun - there are many there, and Don asked how they manage to keep them. The ranger said it is such an easy life, why would they want to go elsewhere? It was a great way to end the day!

We did not have time to go inside, unfortunately, as we had not had lunch, but we did learn that the convicts built much of the infranstructure in Hobart, and they made many of the bricks. Every 100th brick they made, they put their thumbprint in the clay. We are not exactly sure for what purpose the thumbprint was, but the picture of them fascinated us.

Richmond is also the site of a 200-year-old bridge that the convicts built. It is still being used, and the only repairs on it have been to pave the top of the road and shore up one piling where the earth had begun to erode. It is a beautiful bridge built of sandstone . . . oh that all construction could be so sturdy.

We also ate at the Richmond Arms hotel which was built in 1827 and still serving food. Don got to try his Cascade draught there, and we had a delicious meal. Wish we could have spent more time there . . .

Australia knows how to grow bushes and trees. The gardens were very peaceful and we saw numerous new plants, but also some that we have in Wichita. I have decided just to post a few pictures, and if I know what they are, I have written below.

In the pictures above you can see a thistle (it is a different subspecies than the ones we have, but of course, ours are noxious weeds, and they grow them in botanical gardens), coreopsis, lilies of many different sorts, and a plant that collects water. We thought the water was to attract insects, but instead, it provides nutrients to the plant. So many interesting plants!
Finally, on our way out we saw the Bunya Bunya tree, and Don thought he was being very funny with this picture.

If one counts the drive from Dunedin to Christchurch on Tuesday (that took most of the day) and then the flight to Hobart via Melbourne with an 8-hour layover in Melbourne on Wednesday, and then difficulty finding our driver, and then no hot water in our hotel (ultimately we had it, but it took forever to get to the penthouse) and then not knowing that Woolworths was a grocery store and then not being able to operate the oven nor the microwave (we finally sort of figured out the microwave), then one might say it was not exactly a fun adventure but everything worked out!

But Thursday morning dawned bright and sunny . . . and the adventure continued. We were supposed to meet the Gray Line at a transit center . . . but there was no marked place to meet, nothing that said Gray Line, and the Transit Center didn't open until 30 minutes after we were to leave. After asking umpteen million people where we should be (some were close but most had no idea), we asked a young man having coffee if he would dial the tour line because our phone would not connect. He did so - very willingly - and soon we were on our way. I had to laugh when Micky told the young man to tell his mother that she raised a fine young man and she hoped that someday a young man would help his parents when they got to be our age. Anyway, we caught our bus and headed toward Mount Wllington which was about 30 minutes away.
When we left Hobart, we could see the observation tower, but by the time we got there, it had clouded over. It was still an interesting place, but one of the more quirky things was a sign that mentioned a person with an electric car might have difficulty with interference from the towers, and if they couldn't get their car to unlock, or to run, instructions on what to do and who to call were given. We had never seen anything like that before. Because it was so cloudy we didn't take any pictures there, but on the way down, we stopped at a little cafe with REAL hot chocolate (the second time we have had that) and then took a picture of Hobart from a different observation point.

We drove by the Cascade Brewery, which has been in operation since 1824 (and Don tried some later in the day, and even I thought it was pretty good!). They use the spring water near the brewery, and although they have updated their brewing area, they still use the original building for administrative purposes. At the brewery is a path along a rivulet (a river can dry up but a ribulet doesn't), and sometimes platypus can be seen along the area. We happened to see a documentary about that particular phenomenon, so we were pretty excited to see the area.

Then that tour ended, and another one was to start . . . no rest for us!

The flowers, trees, and animals were enthralling, yet there is so much more to like. The people are nice, and they have a sense of responsibility that I wish we had more of in the States. The public toilets were all clean - even the old ones - and we saw zero vandalism. We saw very little litter - I did see one beer bottle, but even in the cities, there was none. The emphasis on restoring land back to the original landsape - at least in places - receives broad support. Although there may be some homelessness, we only saw one man. We felt very safe walking around the city as we did not see any vagrants, though again, they probably exist, but the government has ways to helping those people. Drivers are pretty sane, and there is very little horn honking, except for when tourists accidentally cross the street when they shouldn't (guilty) or a driver driving on the wrong side.
We are sad we did not get to the north island, but that's ok . . . we just may have to come back!Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14961084387427038910noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778743657914921207.post-67760630707918543072024-03-12T01:08:00.001-05:002024-03-12T01:08:57.900-05:00The Art of New ZealandArt is a big part of New Zealand art - both native and not. In Christchurch, murals deck many of the walls of buildings - both those awaiting renovation and new ones, and art using interesting materials impressed us. I shared the art of St. Bathans, but we have pictures of some other pieces that we liked. Enjoy!

They were flying everywhere, and we were able to see three different kinds. It is not too hard to spot them . . . they are so much bigger than the other birds, they are easy to find. The swells were pretty large, so we were bobbing around, but Don managed to get one good picture. We are hoping for another good one from a man on our tour, but the one Don got will have to do for now.

We came across a brown patch in the water, where thousands of fish were eating krill. The birds were eating the fish, so there was a lot of activity. We had never seen krill, so one of the crew pulled some up with a net. The number of gulls and albatross stunned us . . . fun times!

The day was windy, rainy, and cold - just like Scotland, which is why the Scottish people settled there - but for looking at wildlife near the ocean, it just seemed perfect. First we went to the nursery, where the sea lions pups and their moms lived until the babies are old enough for fend for themselves. Because it was cold, they were all hiding in the grass - who knew sea lions and seals would get cold, but they do. Eventually, however, a pup came out and a mom with her pup did, too. The moms are a beautiful blonde, and the pups are brown.

Then we went up the hill to see some sleeping fur seals. At one time, boats would take 30,000 dead seals back to Europe (which made me sick to my stomach to think about), but now there are not very many left. We only saw one lazy guy on the beach - who was resting and digesting - so no good pictures of him, but higher up on the hilld (which is not an easy climb), we found this handsome guy.

Finally we went to the beach to see if we could find the yellow-eyed penguin, a severely-endangered penguin. For the last few weeks, none of the tours had seen one, but lucky for us, our guide found one standing in the brush. We also went to a rehab center where the penguins were molting. Because the penguins stand still for up to three weeks while they molt, the rehab center tries to bring them to their center where they can molt safely. We are awaiting a good picture of the penguin in the wild, but we got some good ones from the rehab center. It surprised us that the penguins lived in the bushes - we had no idea.

We had wanted to see the little blue penguins in the wild, but we were not in the right place. We did see them at the Antarctic Center, but seeing them in the wild would have been awesome. I guess we can't do everything!

As contrasted with Alaska, where one can encounter all sorts of animals in surprising places, there are very few animals here. When New Zealand was first settled by the Europeans, the only mammal on the island was the bat. The remaining species were insects, birds, and basically two reptiles. Unfortunately, with the Europeans came the rats and mice. To control them, they brought stoats, that eat bird eggs leading to the decimation of many species. To control the stoats they brought dogs and cats, that led to the further decimation of many of the species. And somewhere along the line they brought possums, rabbits, hedgehogs, and in the south island, wallabys. Now the governmnt is trying to exterminate the possums and stoats, and one part of the south island is completely free of possums - for now. The hedgehog, though annoying because it roots up people's gardens, eats bugs, which has a positive effect.
We wondered why we do not see many people walking dogs - we know they own them, but apparently there are restrictions on where you can walk them. We have seen a few - but certainly not as many as we would see on a short walk in Wichita. And we have seen very few cats - again, I suspect one must keep their cats inside to protect the native birds.
On our tour, however, we did see some of the native wildlife, as well as a lot of sheep, cattle, and deer.
At our first stop, we saw the variable oystercatcher, the white-faced heron, a kingfisher, many pukekos, several plovers, black swans (which we introduced for food), and the Paradise Duck. The Paradise Duck is very interesting, in that it mates for life. If the female dies first, the male starves himself to death, but if the male dies first, the female finds another mate. Below we have a black swan, a white-faced heron, and an oystercatcher.

We saw the Paradise duck several places, but we only got one picture from our first day in Christchurch, so although it wasn't from our wildlife tour, it still walks like a duck and talks like a duck! It is the white-headed one at the front . . .
