Finding Roots

One of our main purposes for coming to Belfast was to see if we could find the old Kinney homestead. I had been doing plenty of research and even have a picture of the Gough and Kinney homes (now thought not to be that, but when I wrote this, that is what we though), but with no addresses or hints as to where they might have been, we were flying blind. Luckily, our guide, Frank, had some ideas as to where to go, so we first went to the Kilmore church in County Armagh. My great-great-great grandfather, William, attended the church in Mullavilly and was married in the Kilmore church. Because of vandalism, all protestant churches are usually closed during the week, and indeed, this one was. But we were able to see it and imagine walking where he and his wife, Jane Goff, had walked.
Then we headed to Mullavilly for the same purpose. The church is situated near Portadown and must be close to where my family lived, but so much has been built around, it is impossible to know where they lived. The remains of the first church were there, and we were able to see the rebuilt church. src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdcLPLYaiGCjVdDcw6hpT_2VAGx_gSShGzECQICDdDOakgnUUstHZA1Vredjj97MbL2V52hGiKZS0PMOzJeWdT76H28soS4mi-pW7ooLFvMDZsMPy1UlmpbTv_MN2x72UdaY1Py53nW4O2uCRDP6P0F4_INUzIBUHKKqWOxNhrcPRbXG2Ell5VQ-6J1GbB/s320/IMG_9237.JPG"/>
Finally we went to the church at Tullygally, which is All Saints' Church in Tullylish. This is the one place we feel certain at least one of our ancestors is buried. John Kerr, the father of Thomas Kinney's wife, Margaret Carr (Kerr), was buried at the church in Tullygally. Only the bell tower from the first church still stands (first picture below), but the rebuilt church in the meadow below the old graveyard is in fine shape. We feel certain that the Kerr family is buried in the old cemetery, and we found some Goughs there, too, which may have been Jane Goff's family.
It would have been fun to have had more time to look, but we were in the right area!
