Plowing Ice
On Wednesday we went to Tallinn. After loading a very nice ferry at the harbor in Helsinki, we headed across the Bay of Finland in the Baltic Sea, a trip that took about two hours.
We had seen that the harbor appeared to be iced over, so we wondered how the ferry would manage the ice. Since the bay is just brackish, it is not frozen solid, and the ferry seemed to have no problem cutting through the ice. We loved watching it, however, as sometimes smaller pieces of ice would skitter across the larger, smoother pieces, and sometimes, the ship would send pieces of ice flying. We were fascinated. Having never sailed through ice, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
