I have never really understood how the values of currencies are calculated against each other – seems like voodoo economics to me – but it seems more often than not, we end up on the losing side of the exchange rate. The last time we came here, the dollar and the Canadian Loony were fairly comparable in exchange rate, meaning Canada was really expensive!
And yes, Canada is still expensive, but this time, we could buy Canadian dollars for 81 cents, meaning that it is at least cheaper in American dollars. So the $129 trip to the grocery store only cost $103 or so. And we haven’t bought gas yet, but I think we will find a similar advantage.
It is always hard when buying gas because we buy it by the litre. Do you know how many litres it takes to cure Willie’s drinking habit? Well, between 200 and 240. Gas will still be about $3.50 a gallon, but that is a lot less than 2013, when it was over $4.00 routinely. One time on that trip, we paid over $6 per gallon. Yikes! We anticipate not having to do that this year.
