McDonald Lodge

In many National Parks, grand lodges were built for the visitors of the 30’s.  They still stand and are so fun to visit.  The main lodge for Glacier is McDonald, named for a tree that had the name McDonald carved into it.

In the 30s, the only way to get to the Lodge was by boat, so the front of the hotel faces the water. Now the entrance is on what was the back of the lodge, and I have to admit, I was dubious as to what it would look like.  But there is no mistaking that this lodge is as grand as the others – just not as large.  The “chandeliers” in the main room set the Native American theme, and along with all of the animal heads, carvings, and wooden furniture, it was as elegant as any other lodge we have seen.

Woody was pretty impressed with the McDonald Lodge
