On our way home, Don decided to go on the Cassiar Highway through Prince George. It is a less-traveled road than the Alaska Highway, and since we had already been on the Alcan, we wanted to try something different.
Saturday, once we reached Junction 37 and turned south, it was obvious that the road was less well-maintained, if that is possible. It was a winding mountain road, but it was smoother than the Alcan in most places. Narrow with unmaintained shoulders, however, caused it to be a slower drive.
It was well worth it. The scenery so far has been spectacular. We were also privy to some gold-mining ventures, beautiful lakes, and Jade City. Apparently, jade is very prevalent in this area, and one family mines it and turns it into art work. I liked looking but we don't need any more stuff. Tell that to Don, however. He walked out with only one little item, but it was more than we needed.
The campground at Dease Lake has no electricity, water, or sewer . . . but it does have Wifi. Interesting, but I am grateful. The huge lake (several miles long) is crystal clear and the perfect place for a nice evening of camping. We understand the auroras are to be spectacular . . . unfortunately, it appears as if the clouds are going to be thick. Too bad, as this dark lake would make the perfect viewing environment.
Tomorrow we head to Stewart and then to see the bears at Hyder, we hope. We heard today that the bears may not be there, but if that is our biggest disappointment of the trip, we are in good shape.
We also noticed on the webcams that Denali is in full fall splendor. We were just a week early. Oh well, guess we will have to go back!
