Aussie Football
We were introduced to Aussie Football at Jani's, and thank goodness Brian was there to help us understand the rules. We watched a game Thursday night - one that Brian was watching but not necessarily rooting for one team - and we asked question after question so that on Friday, when the Adelaide Crows were playing, we would understand the game. Then we watched it again on Saturday night!
This style of football is a combination of rubgy, basketball, and soccer, which is nothing like American football. There are 18 people on a team and only 3 substitutes. The players can run up to 15 km per game - yikes - and it is a fast game. I wish I could explain the game, but to anyone reading this who has never seen it, it won't make sense. The object of the game is to kick (yes kick) a ball through goal posts for 6 points . . . if they run it through it is only 1 point, and if they miss the kick but get it through two wider goal posts they also receive 1 point. To get the ball downfield, a runner can dribble the ball, run it 30 meters and then either kick or punch the ball to another player, or punch the ball - no passing.
Oh, and they wear no pads or helmets.
We loved watching the game, as it is high speed, high scoring, and fun!
