The Fruit of New Zealand
We were told that on our way to Queenstown from Mt. Cook, we would stop at Mrs. Jones' Family Fruit Stall, and luckily, we arrived before she closed. Besides fruit - and there was a lot of it - she had numerous varieties ofnuts, dried fruits, candy, and ice cream.
Our guide told us to look for red kiwis, peacherines, and a cross between a nectarine and an apricot. We bought all three! The kiwi is actually a Chinese gooseberry, and it is not native to New Zealand. When they started to become popular, the New Zealanders changed the name to kiwi because they didn't feel that a Chinese Gooseberry would sell well in the USA. They have since developed a red one, and although we haven't tried it, we will. They look just like the green ones from the outside . . . but inside:
The nectarine/apricot was delicious, and so was the kiwi! I don't recall what the nectarine/apricots were called, but I would buy them every day if I could. And under vanilla yogurt - yum!! We have yet to try the peacherine, but that is next!
