As we were driving to Chama, a Facebook post informed us that our friend, Jim Davis, was also there. We never expected to see anyone we knew at the train station, much less Jim, who now lives in Arkansas. But we should not have been surprised. He is a train buff of many years, and he had docented at the station before. He has decided to take it up again . . . hence his trip. But if you had told me we would be able to have dinner with him last night, and then see him again this morning before we left, I would have called you a dreamer. But we did.
We met my cousin, Marci, at the station, and we spent the entire day with her. The scenery was spectacular, and between conversations, we actually learned something about the area, the building of the train, and the history of it. Don took many more pictures than he should have, but that's ok . . . he can delete them, and he is learning a lot about his new camera.
On the bus ride home, Don was sitting next to a woman from Texas. As they chatted, they discovered that they had something in common. She has been a frequent visitor to the Noel's cabin in the Holy Ghost. It was so fun to talk to her about the cabins.
Finally, after having dinner with Marci and visiting her home, we headed back to the RV. Suddenly in front of us, five elk ran across the road . . . a buck, two cows, and two babies. We managed to stop in plenty of time, but the two deer that nearly ran out in front of us were a little closer call. Don again managed to avoid them, but my adrenaline skyrocketed. We made it safely to the RV park, but we could use fewer of the deer surprises and more of the Jim Davis surprises.
"Bucks" are boy deer, bulls are boy elk. Does are girl deer, cows are girl elk. Fawns are deer babies, calves are elk babies.
