We had planned to be at the cabin for July 3rd and then head to Chris Mann's wedding before we "officially" left for Alaska. The cabin did not work out as planned, but we were still able to get to California. We arrived late on July 3rd so we could connect with everyone before the wedding.
On the 4th, after having breakfast with our friends, we went to the Malibu Family Farm Vineyard. As we were relaxing and enjoying the beautiful day, one of the people in our group suggested that we give a toast similar to one his friend gave at a previous event in Wichita . . . the "sucks to be us" toast, a tongue-in-cheek recognition of how fortunate we are to be living in a country that allows us the opportunity and the privilege to enjoy such a day. It was not lost on us that it was July 4.
The Malibu Family Farm is a vineyard that Chris, Laura, Kenneth and Melinda had gone to. Very low key, we saw families picnicking on the beautiful grounds, enjoying not only the wine but also the gorgeous scenery.
We took different routes to and from the vineyard, both of which were winding, curvy and beautiful. We and the Gaskills caravaned with the Grahams and Wells, which could have been exciting in LA traffic but was, in reality, pretty easy. We had purchased bread, cheese, crackers, cookies, and chips, and with all of our food in tow, caught the shuttle to the vineyard. A short two-minute drive from the parking lot to the entrance and we were there. They did not have an admission fee, and the glasses they provided could be taken home, which made the day very affordable.
Our group purchased several varieties of wine, and between everyone, most of it was consumed before we left. Several hours later, we were on our way back to the hotel to prepare for the rehearsal dinner in Malibu.
We wish all people could have the freedom and joy that we in the United States experience. Our trip to Malibu Family Farm was a relaxing reminder of how lucky we are!
