Some of them were very much like the ones at Mesa Verde. They had the birds, the horses, though the people were much different - triangular bodies and the like. They were similar enough, however, that we felt that they were just an extension of what we had seen.
As we rounded the corner we saw the older pictographs, which are painted designs, in contrast to petroglyphs, which are carved designs. The pictographs were painted in red, and many of them were life-sized.
Many of the people had big eyes . . . no, huge eyes . . . antenna and trapezoidal bodies. They looked very much like the space aliens of a 1950's movie. This group was painted high up in the hillside, so we couldn't quite figure out how the people got to them, but they did. The other group, which was on private land, was close to the ground. I really wanted to go stand next to them, but we were warned not to.
We are somewhat surprised that these treasures are just left out to weather, but we're not sure how we would protect them. In the meantime, we feel lucky to have seen them.
