This morning we headed to Lake Louise to hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House.
We knew the lake was going to be a milky green, so we did not feel it was nearly as pretty as Lake Moraine. The reflections were not as grand, and although the lake was bigger, it just did not hold the charm the other one did. But it was still nice to see the hotel and read their excellent comments on nature and wildlife.
On the way to the tea house, we passed this lovely little lake - Mirror Lake. It was a smaller version of Lake Moraine, but it had a geologic formation behind it called a Beehive. To see that up close was pretty spectacular. For a geologist wannabe, it was a fascinating look at layered rocks.
The hike, though not stressful in Lake Katherine terms, was still plenty challenging. When we arrived, we found a small wooden building with a veranda. There were probably 10 tables for over 100 people. Needless to say, we opted for the "take-out" version.
The prices were pretty steep, but what could we expect of something that had been helicoptered into the area in May or packed up by horses? Frankly, the prices were pretty reasonable when you consider that! Don and Di had a tuna sandwich, with freshly-made bread; curry lentil soup (so-so); and I had quinoa salad. Yum. Then we had freshly made tea biscuits with jam and tea - Blue Mango Green tea. We have to find that - it was really good.
By the time we got down the hill, we had walked 15,000 steps and done 130 flights of stairs. Great hike for old people!
(On a side note, we were stopped by a blonde 20-something, who was listening to music on her iPod, asked us, "Now, where does this trail go?" Uh, honey, you should know where you are going!)
