When we arrived in Alaska, the fireweed was everywhere. And it still is, but even moreso. So we assumed that fireweed is the state flower. Nope.
How is that possible? I thought the state flower should be the one everyone sees - like sunflowers in Kansas and yucca in New Mexico. But in Alaska, the state flower is the Forget-Me-Not. It is a nice sentiment, but we have yet to see one.
Well, we did finally see one today . . . at the Kenai Cabin Park. One little lonesome plant.
It is a beautiful flower . . . but it is small and not showy.
It doesn't even photograph well, though the blue flowers at the bottom can be seen. Anyway, if I were allowed to vote, I would change the state flower to fireweed . . . but no one asked me!
