Kenai Fascinations

As we have toured Kenai, I have found a number of fascinating things.

First, Veronica's Coffee House.  Yes, I had the picture yesterday.  This morning we decided to eat breakfast there.  My fare was granola and yogurt - nothing fancy but delicious.  Don had a polenta quiche with reindeer sausage.  He almost had it all eaten before we took a picture of it.

We discovered when we were here in March several years ago that we both liked reindeer sausage, and we now know where to find it.  So we are bringing some home with us - yum! The quiche had a polenta crust that was crumbly (which accounted for the bite I dropped on the floor because it fell apart on my fork), and the egg mixture was perfectly spiced.  We loved it!

We sat at a corner table on two bar stools, and this was our view outside.

It is such a quaint setting, we will be eating there again tomorrow morning!

Second, the confluence of the Kenai River and the Cook Inlet.  At high tide, the river is forced backwards while the tide comes in.  At low tide, the river flows into the Cook Inlet, making a definite separation between fresh and salt water.  I think it makes for an interesting picture, especially on mornings like this when the sun is shining.

In the above picture, the mud flats are at the front, and then the shiny part in the middle is the river; past that is the Inlet.  It shows up much better in person, but this will allow us to remember how beautiful it is.  We had also had an immature bald eagle flying past the RV.  In about four years, it, too, will have what Don calls "a well-invested head of gray hair."

Last is the dove-tailed wood.  There is a little shack that is falling down and in terrible disrepair. It is too bad, because it is a cool little shack.  What I especially loved about it is that it has some of the original caulking in one of the seams - burlap.  It barely shows on the left side of the picture, right at the beginning of the shadow.  I love little things that show the history of a place.

We decided to stay one more night at this RV park.  That way Katie can fish (we saw a guy catch a flounder, so she has flounder fever), and we can take a drive up to the Cook Inlet State Park.  Maybe I will find more Kenai Fascinations!
