Bridges

The Oregon Coast Highway was a marvel at the time it was built.  The main engineer, Conde McCullough, used various techniques to build the complicated highway through the very dense brush and steep cliffs.

One of his missions was to make the highway beautiful so that it augmented, rather than detracted from, the coastline.  As a part of that mission, he built ornate bridges.  Using state-of-the-art technology - steel reinforced concrete - he designed and built the bridges that were essential and gorgeous at the same time.

About the bridge at the Heceta Head, one newspaper reporter wrote that he could not understand spending so much money to go over such a small creek.  I believe the reporter suffered from lack of vision.

As we drove through Florence, further down Highway 101, we ran into this beauty!  This is my favorite so far.  It is a bascule bridge, which means it can open to allow larger boats through it. It looks very Gothic to me!
