Kluane Lake

After breakfast at The Burnt Toast Café (a repeat from our trip before) and a trip to the new Canadian superstore (that was lovely, by the way), we drove down to Kluane Lake. Because it was rainy, the drive was not as pretty as we had hoped, but the lake is still gorgeous.

This lake has an interesting history - 300 to 400 years ago a glacier left a moraine that filled the exit from the lake.  Over time, a new exit was formed out the other end of the lake . . . and by the time the glacier retreated to allow the previous exit to open, the other exit was already in use and so, rather than flowing to the Pacific Ocean, the lake now empties into the Yukon River system that ends up in the Arctic Ocean - a much longer route for sure!

Unfortunately, the glacier that feeds the lake is no longer doing so, as of last year, hence, the lake is down about 15 feet.  That appeared to affect the fishing, as no one even had a bite.  We were camped at the far end of the campground, so it was lovely and quiet, but we did see some bear skat, so we were a little wary.

I thought the hills with their rusty dirt were pretty!

Not a bad view for Willie!
After dinner, we made a campfire and began cooking s’mores when the rain descended upon us – quickly.  There were even white-caps on the lake!  We cleaned up just in time for the rain to stop, but we did not resume the cooking, and early on the 30th, we began driving to Tok.

Woody watching Don make s'mores!
