Salmon!

On Monday, before we drove to Hope, Alaska, we went to the Boggs Begich Center, which is a visitor's center for the area.  When we walked in, Katie, Chris, and Teri found a friend:

After going through the displays, we talked to the docents about the center.  They explained that they have a viewing platform down the stream, and the salmon have started coming in, so we went to see them.  Sure enough . . . we saw several, including this big one!

Then we went to Hope, ostensibly just to look around.  We had lunch at the local bar, where the bartender, Eugene, told us he was from Colby.  I neglected to get a picture of Eugene, but the bar was one of those special places with a lot of charm:

After lunch, we saw many people were fishing at the confluence of Resurrection Creek and the Turnagain Arm.  As soon as we saw Katie begin to drool, we knew we needed to give her some time to fish.

She grabbed her tackle and her boots, talked to some men who knew what they were doing, and launched her lure.  Within about ten minutes, she pulled in a pink salmon.

That was when were told that no one eats the pink salmon - that is what is used in dog food.  Oh great!

So, we released it.  But Katie had a ball, and now we are anxious to catch many more kinds of fish.
