The Heuers

We went to visit Ted and Beth Heuer when we were in Homer.  Beth and I taught together for one year when we were both at Collegiate, and we have kept in touch since then.  So when we knew we were going to Homer, we contacted her.

Saturday night, we had the opportunity to visit their house.  We knew we were in for a treat when we headed up their hill and these cute sandhill cranes greeted us.

We exited our car to see this view across the bay.  They have the same view from their kitchen, living room, bedroom, and deck.  On days like this, I am not sure I would ever leave the premises!

And their flowers.  They are wonderful gardeners, and their efforts have been well-rewarded with gorgeous plants.  Homer has been quite dry this year, and Homerites gather water in rain barrels.  Beth said some of their plants have not done as well as they had hoped . . . but for us they looked like they were doing quite well.  Compared to what happens to plants in Kansas, these were amazing.  Enjoy a view of their flower containers!

And a topside view of their lily plants.  (I am lucky to get one flower, much less this multitude of flowers on one stem!)

Then for dinner, we were served freshly caught King Salmon, broccoli slaw (I had never heard of it, but we are having it again), pasta salad, wonderful veggies from their other garden, and cherry pie.  What a meal!  I watched Beth cook the salmon and I now have a better idea of how to cook it without its getting dry.  Of course, any meal capped with cherry pie a la mode makes our "Top Ten" list!
